Occupational Summary

Assist with the operation of Duke University Marine Laboratory Research Vessel (R/V) Cape Hatteras including, but not limited to, vessel piloting and navigation; performing a variety of duties involved in the maintenance, repair and operation of the vessel; and standing lookout and winch operation watches

Work Performed

Assist with the operation of all scientific gear, both that provided by the vessel as well as scientific party.

Assist in preparing the vessel for docking and undocking, including dock lines, shore power cable, and telephone service.

Conduct vessel piloting and navigation, while assuming underway Mate watch.

Supervise and coordinate crew activities aboard the ship, inspect equipment during loading to ensure that the load is stowed according to specifications.

Perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of deck equipment, handling gear and running gear; break out, rig, overhaul and stow equipment as directed.

Stand watch at sea to advise deck officer of impending hazards; sound depth of water; steer vessel as directed.

Assist in launching and retrieving over-the-side scientific equipment, operate winches as directed.

Chip, scrape, brush, and paint fixtures, decks, superstructure and sides of vessel.

Swab or wash decks to remove salt, oil, dirt and debris. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires a minimum United States Coast Guard license 500 gross tons, near coastal waters

Experience

Work requires five years experience in the operation and navigation of marine vessels or other related seagoing experience in order to acquire skills necessary to supervise various maritime functions and assist in the piloting of the R/V Cape Hatteras.

OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
