Occupational Summary

Escort individuals or groups on tours, or through places of interest such as industrial establishments, public buildings, and art galleries.

Work Performed

Lead tours through places of interest. Audiences may include K-12 school groups, adult groups, and/or public tours.

Research tour sites and subject matter at a level appropriate to the age group.

Describe tour points of interest to group members, and respond to questions.

Monitor visitors' activities to ensure compliance with establishment or tour regulations and safety practices.

Provide directions and other pertinent information to visitors.

Attend training programs as assigned. Training may include tour technique, familiarization with tour sites, and/or learning about exhibits or other pertinent subject matter.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a general educational background normally equivalent to a high school education. College degree preferred.

Experience

Work requires six months of experience in a position involving public contact to acquire skills necessary to effectively interact with tour audiences.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. The ability to speak clearly. The ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, and asking questions as appropriate. The ability to observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources. The ability to manage one's own time and the time of others.
