Occupational Summary

Perform all levels of repairs and preventive maintenance of utility distribution systems. Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on all steam distribution, chilled water, hot water, domestic (potable) water, storm sewer, domestic sewer services, reclaimed water systems, and assist lower level mechanics in their areas of responsibility. Perform supervisory duties in the absence of the regular supervising manager.

Work Performed

Following a predetermined schedule as well as emergency work as needed, assist in preventative maintenance on utility distribution systems and building components related to the utility distribution mechanics responsibilities.

Assist other mechanics as required/directed by the shop manager.

Make assignments to lower level personnel using applicable planning and scheduling methods, in the absence of the supervising manager.

In the course of normal work assignments, demonstrate and share technical work means and methods and guidance for lower level personnel.

Perform trade related calculations including thermal expansion, the use of equivalents and conversion tables.

Use and maintain specialized testing devices, hand and power tools associated with the trade.

Assist qualified mechanics with identifying and performing maintenance on various utility distribution and building service components.

Install and maintain all utility distribution and building service components.

Analyze utility distribution and building service system or component failures and recommend proper corrective actions.

Data entry into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) relevant to work orders, inventory/ asset management, and preventive maintenance forms, lockout/tagout procedures, hot work permitting, and other trade-relevant documentation.

Perform site walks and inspections of proposed work sites, construction sites, and other related campus work areas.

Assist other mechanics as required/directed.

Clean all job related areas, pick up and deliver parts.

Use other required computer software applicable to maintenance operations.

Perform safety duties as a fire watch or confined space entry attendant or entrant.

Perform and oversee lower level mechanics in the task of lock-out/tag- out of equipment for maintenance and construction activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein.

Perform service and calibration of gas monitor/detection equipment and other job-related equipment.

Assume the duties and responsibilities of the supervising manager in their absence as needed.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Completed training on General OSHA standards and requirements, hot work permits, fire watch, confined space entry, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.

Must possess the ASME Section IX welding certificate- 6G.

Experience

Work requires 7 years' experience in installing, maintaining and/or repairing underground distribution and building utility systems, with a minimum of 5 years' of utility distribution mechanic experience at Duke University.
