Work Performed

A Duke student employee is one whose primary function is that of enrollment in a full-time degree program at Duke, and employment at Duke is secondary to such a primary undertaking.

Registration for a minimum of 3 courses or 9 constitutes a full-time program. In addition, a person in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences shall be considered registered in a full-time program if he is registered (1) for a minimum of 3 units after passing the preliminary examination for a doctoral degree candidate or (2) for less than 9 units to complete the requirements as a Masters degree candidate. Social Security is not deducted from the pay of a student as defined above. (Social Security will be deducted where student works during summer and is not registered for any courses).

Duke graduate student employees who work more than 20 hours per week are eligible for Workmen's Compensation, Emergency Call Back, Holiday Premium Pay, and Overtime for all hours worked beyond 40 per week.

A Duke undergraduate student employee may work no more than 19 hours per week during academic schedule and is eligible for Workmen's Compensation benefits only.
