Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in the care of primates and the operation of the Duke University Lemur Center.

Work Performed

Perform in a proactive leadership role and communicate regularly with area managers regarding animal management, husbandry and welfare, facility maintenance, research needs, and staff supervision/development.

Hire, schedule and make work assignments for technician staff. Assist in the development of departmental goals, and plans.

Routinely monitor and review the work performance of technician staff and ensure completion of tasks in a timely and effective fashion and compliance with Center's and University guidelines and SOPs.

Prepare and conduct performance appraisals as assigned.

Verify employee work schedules. Provide written reports as assigned.

Handle personnel situations in a timely, objective, and consistent manner, and in accordance with University policies.

Order, prepare, and distribute animal food as required.

Ensure compliance with all University policies and procedures.

Regularly observe all Center animals closely and objectively. Apply knowledge and prior experiences to propose or implement change where appropriate, consulting with area managers as needed.

Maintain animal records as designated.

Regularly examine condition of animal enclosures and equipment. Report maintenance needs, and perform minor maintenance tasks.

Participate in animal training sessions and maintain appropriate records.

Develop and maintain detailed and current knowledge of natural history, husbandry, and captive management of species and individuals.

Maintain proficiency in area routines and specialized procedures.

Assist the Research Manager in scheduling and use of animals for research, including selection of appropriate project animals, and coordinating diet or housing changes with technicians where appropriate.

Assist Curator with implementation of the Center's animal collection plan to support goals of animal welfare, conservation breeding management, research, and education.

Coordinate and facilitate technician work schedules to implement animal moves, animal introductions, NHE releases and other animal management activities as planned by the Curator and according to current husbandry protocols. Assist technicians with observations and monitoring of all activities. Communicate results with Curator in a timely manner.

Communicate with other institutions and individuals who request information on prosimian husbandry. Direct questions to appropriate area managers.

Assist the veterinary department in training primate technicians to recognize signs of illness or distress in animals and ensure that they are proficient in administering medication to animals under their care.

Coordinate with the veterinary and research department to schedule routine animal interventions (pregnancy palpations, tail shaves, radio and nylon I.D. collaring) in coordination with technician schedules and other animal handling needs.

Demonstrate knowledge of and implement University-wide and Center emergency procedures as needed.

Train and direct work of interns, seasonal employees and full-time technician staff.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Minimum three years related experience or equivalent required.

A working knowledge of the facility, including all buildings and enclosures and experience with the husbandry procedures including vet care and research projects.
