Occupational Summary

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of research operations, data, and clerical duties to support the conduct of clinical research, with hands-on guidance from a Clinical Research Professional (CRP).

Work Performed

Performs all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to learning and service excellence towards participants, principal investigators, colleagues, and other departments. Assumes responsibility for following the policies and procedures of the department and organization. The specific nature of the pre-apprenticeship will reflect the needs of the sponsoring organization, the student's learning goals, and the priorities of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and study portfolio. Tasks will focus on foundational skills and introductory activities within and across the clinical research domains defined by the Joint Taskforce for Clinical Trial Competency.

The pre-apprentice will gain knowledge and build competence by combining related instruction from their clinical research degree program with structured work-based learning experiences at Duke.

Perform assigned tasks under direct supervision from a CRP mentor.

Attend related classroom instruction as part of a clinical research degree program and apply knowledge to work onsite.

Learn and apply fundamental clinical research competencies through work- based learning experiences with study team.

Assist with basic research operations, including participant screening, recruitment, and data entry.

Document participant information under guidance and prepare study materials.

Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for data collection, specimen handling, and documentation.

Attend study team meetings to observe and learn research processes.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Enrollment in an approved clinical research degree program.

Experience

None.

Skills

Can easily use computing software and web-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office products and internet browsers).
