Occupational Summary

Position serves as the full-time or part-time Chief Mate/Relief Captain of the 72' aluminum catamaran oceanographic research vessel, RV Shearwater, operated by Duke University and located at the Duke University Marine Laboratory. Reporting to the Captain of the RV Shearwater, this position will be primarily acting as crew, assisting the Captain with vessel operations and maintenance. When acting as Relief Captain, will have overall responsibility for vessel and command at sea. This position is seagoing and will be split with shore efforts between frequent cruises. Some work on weekends and holidays will be required. This is a Non-exempt position.

Work Performed

Reports to and works under the direction of the Captain. Assists the Captain in cruise and navigation planning, ensures the safety of crew members and passengers by providing safety instruction, conducting drills, monitoring activities, and ensuring all safety systems are operable.

Assists/directs the planned logistics and prepares vessel for upcoming science missions in coordination with Marine Technician and Science Party. Responsible for embarking, securing and demobilizing of equipment and personnel as it relates to vessel stability and safety.

Stands bridge navigation watch. Operate ship's propulsion, steering, and navigation/communication electronics as required.

Serves as a deckhand by handling lines and rigging equipment when the Captain is on watch.

Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of deck machinery and cargo handling equipment, including the launch/recovery of the RHIB and other over-the-side scientific equipment. Serves a primary RHIB coxswain.

Performs general maintenance duties to include deck spaces, engineering spaces, installed equipment, interior and exterior preventative maintenance, galley duty and housekeeping.

Assists in preparing for and conducting annual U.S. Coast Guard inspection, in accordance with applicable USCG regulations and CFRs. Performs other related duties under the direction of the Captain.

Participation in a Chemical Testing Program as defined by 46 CFR parts 4 and 16, 33 CFR part 95 and 49 CFR part 40.

Serves as Relief Captain for R/V Shearwater, R/V Richard T. Barber and R/V Kirby-Smith as needed. Performs the duties of the Vessel Master when the Captain is absent or off watch. In this operational capacity ensures the vessel follows all applicable Federal, State, Local and Duke University regulations and policies. Is overall responsible for the safety of the vessel, vessel operation and the safety of all persons on board. Sets watch schedule and supervises crew in completion of assigned tanks. Serves as chief navigator, ensuring all cruises are pre-planned and courses plotted. Serves as chief helmsman for all docking and any hazardous navigational situations. Primary liaison with science party, faculty, marine technician, vessel crew and Superintendent to execute scientific missions cruise objectives and educational programs safely and effectively.

Makes immediate reports to the Captain, or to the Marine Superintendent when the Captain is not on board, of all accidents or injuries, no matter how minor. Makes immediate reports to the Captain, or Marine Superintendent when the Captain is not on board, of any incidence or complaint of harassment, sexual harassment, or sexual assault.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Minimum Qualifications: USCG Merchant Marine Credential : Master of Self-Propelled Vessels of Less than 100 Gross Register Tons (GRT) Upon Near Coastal Waters. USCG Medical Certificate. USCG approved drug test. FCC Radio Operator License. CPR and First Aid training certificate. High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred qualifications: Formal Seamanship Training (e.g. Associates degree, two-year certificate in Nautical Science, or equivalent programs).

Experience

Required Experience: 3+ years' experience on a similar vessel to the R/V Shearwater or oceanographic research.

Must understand the principles of good seamanship.

General knowledge of marine maintenance with respect to small boats and deck equipment to include operation of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, pumps, generators, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, winches and other equipment common to research vessels.

Preferred Experience:Command-at-sea experience and familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations in support of ocean research.
