Occupational Summary

Train, coordinate and participate in a variety of routine and complex technical procedures and activities related to the care of various animals.

Work Performed

Coordinate and perform in providing health care to animals.

Administer daily treatments and medications for animals as instructed or required.

Assist in processing health inspections and related requirements for interstate and international shipment of animals; transport animals, supplies, and materials; operate motor vehicle as required.

Evaluate potential problems relating to the health and social welfare of animals; notify supervisor of perceived problems and/or take action to correct changes in environmental conditions which effect the well-being of the animals.

Assist in the organization and scheduling of procedures to facilitate projects; coordinate and participate in the performance of routine and standardized tests.

Administer routine and special treatments to animals as instructed, prescribed and/or required; assist in diagnostic treatment.

Perform technical skills such as venipuncture, surgical assistance, animal restraint (especially NHP) radiology, injections, and formulate and administer special diets as requested.

Anesthetize animals as required and serve as circulating nurse during procedures requiring anesthetized animals; assist in animal surgery as requested.

Must demonstrate the ability to safely handle and restrain animals.

Ensure detailed records and input of data into collection database on a routine basis.

Assist in diagnostic laboratory procedures, performing routine test.

Participating in developing and maintaining an appropriate and varied enrichment plan

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology with RVT. ALAT or LAT certification preferred.

Experience

Work requires at least two years of experience in a laboratory, zoological, animal care facility or related setting to become familiar with the technical tasks involved in the care of animals (dog, cat, and large animal acceptable).

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
