Occupational Summary
Assist in installation, repair and maintenance of utility plant equipment, facilities and distribution including overhauling, adjusting and repairing chillers, boilers, generators, pumps and auxiliary equipment.
Work Performed
Following a predetermined schedule, assist in preventative maintenance on utility plant equipment, facilities and distribution to include changing filters, checking pump alignments, lubrication of pump and fan bearings, gear boxes, linkages, and moving parts, replace pump seals and align shafts, clean and wipe down equipment, etc.
Read and understand equipment operation & maintenance manuals
Assist in scheduled overhauls on major utility equipment
Assist mechanics in installation, repair or replacement of all major utility equipment including pipes, conveyors, pumps, fans, valves, traps, expansion joints, relief valves, and pressure reducing valves
Fill out paperwork including but not limited to work orders, inventory, and preventive maintenance forms.
Use specialized testing devices, hand and power tools associated with the trade.
Assist in skilled craft work related to plant maintenance that may include welding and cutting, and pipefitting
Operate and maintain all types of loaders and hoists at utility plants.
Maintain a clean and orderly working environment by cleaning assigned areas
Perform safety duties as a fire watch or confined space entry attendant
Assist other mechanics as required/directed.
Notify supervisor when they discover equipment is in need of repair
Perform other related duties incidental to the work above
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
Work requires two years experience in installing, maintaining and/or repairing utility systems equipment, facilities, or distribution. Must pass the Basic Duke Utility Systems Operations Test within 6 months of entering position. Must earn universal refrigerant certification within six months of entering position.
