Occupational Summary

Perform general painting, mixing colors, stains, coating and small repair of sheetrock and plaster in University facilities and direct lower level personnel

Work Performed

Assist painters in assigned work.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Read blueprints. Use riggings, hoist, ladders, scaffolding, lifts and other various equipment used in painting.

Repair and finish drywall for painting. Properly use, care, and maintenance for/or equipment used in painting trade.

Use hand and power tools safely. Erect scaffolding, ladders and lifts.

Knowledge of safety procedures for working on ladders, scaffolds and lifts. Correct protect surfaces adjacent to paint spraying areas.

Select brushes, rollers, pads, mitts and other related accessories for applying paint. Correctly store and maintain brushes and rollers.

Calculate scaffold loads, area load, live loads, concentrated loads, and cantilevered loads. Safely operate and maintain all paint equipment.

Use tools, materials and other methods for preparing surfaces for paint, and or coating. Identify different types of sealant and filters and apply these to construction substrates.

Use sand blasting equipment correctly and safely. Identify failures of paints/coatings on exterior and interior substrates and find causes and remedies of these failures.

Apply various clear finishes. Recognize and remedy paint/coating failures caused by improper preparation and application of coatings.

Recognize and remedy coating discoloration. Use correct procedures for mixing, tinting, and matching colors.

Use color wheel, the Munsell, Federal Standard 595B, and other color systems. Use correct methods for limiting dust, debris, and hazardous materials from contaminating the environment. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades training, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Completed forklift training.

Experience

Completed Level 6, Painter II program requirements or have 4 years experience in painter trade and is able to pass all required tests for Level 7, Senior I painter.
