Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of noninvasive technical procedures in cardiac graphics utilizing high frequency sound waves to study movement and size of the various cardiac structures for the diagnosis of heart disorders.

Work Performed

Operate echocardiographic equipment to obtain and record two-dimensional and M-mode graphic representations of the heart utilizing high frequency sound waves to assist physician in the diagnosis of cardiac malfunctions, malformations and abnormalities.

Record results of procedures on tape, motion picture and still film; scan and inspect resultant pictures and tracings to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.

Provide a preliminary diagnostic report to a higher level technician and final preliminary tracing interpretation to include an exact assessment of the size and movement of the heart chamber, movements and timing of the heart valves for echoes and measurements of heart sounds and their origin.

Prepare patients for diagnostic procedures to include taking vital signs and measurements, positioning patients and explaining procedures; review medical histories of patients.

Clean, adjust and perform routine maintenance on echocardiograph equipment to ensure proper functioning. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; reorder as required. Assist in the training of new personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires sufficient education/training to acquire American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification in cardiac ultrasound, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS).

Experience

Registry eligible. Registry preferred within 12 months of employment.
