Occupational Summary

Coordinate the management of the Duke University Primate Center's records and documents regarding the animal colony, tissues, research proposals, researchers, research schedules, students and volunteers. Serve as Primate Center photographer to include developing and maintaining the archive slide collection and providing photographs as needed.

Work Performed

Update, maintain and organize all colony records including, but not limited to, individual animal records, DUPC Colony Master Book of births and deaths, animal inventory reports, animal research/photography use records and yearly breeding loan update reports; maintain Animal Record Keeping System (ARKS) data and submit monthly reports to International Species Information System (ISIS).

Maintain liaison with the AZA cooperative breeding programs; correspond with zoos and research facility personnel regarding animal records and husbandry requirements; submit annual reports to prosimian studbook keepers and to IZY; prepare and submit reports to USFWS and other government agencies as required; prepare and submit renewal permits as required.

Identify suitable homes for surplus animals according to DUPC animal disposition policy; prepare paperwork for all animal shipments, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and foreign requirements.

Prepare annual reports and summaries for senior staff, advisory committee and board of visitor review; participate in DUPC meetings by bringing forward SSP/studbook breeding recommendations and other recommendation, records or reports as appropriate; attend regional and national meetings as appropriate.

Enforce all DUPC research policies; coordinate and attend research committee meetings; prepare and disseminate committee proposals for review; initiate the coordination, dissemination of information and problem solving regarding all research and classroom use at the Center; maintain records of research documentation and project/class schedules.

Maintain liaison with researchers requesting tissue samples; prepare and maintain paperwork for all tissue sales and shipments.

Provide DUPC slides/photographs as required for publication, archives, gift or commercial use; develop and maintain DUPC archive slide collection; provide photos of staff, researchers and volunteers as needed; maintain annual log of published photographs; obtain approval from director or operations manager for all photographs submitted for publication involving DUPC's facilities or animals.

Serve as contact for all technical volunteers and student interns.

Contribute registrar news articles as requested for publication in DUPC newsletter.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires two years post-secondary education in Zoology, Biology, Anthropology, Animal Science or a related field.

Experience

Work generally requires three years of experience in a zoo, animal care facility or similar setting to become familiar with record keeping and government permit application processes as well as animal management programs. Work also requires photographic ability.
