Occupational Summary

Perform journeyman level installation, repair and maintenance of locks, door closures, panic hardware systems and electronic locking systems; recombinant and adjust locks, including coding, key cutting and duplication.

Work Performed

Install, repair and maintain all major types of locks, door closures, and panic hardware systems including but to limited to keycard and electromagnetic systems to conform with current federal, state and local safety and security regulations.

Assist in the installation of electronic and other special locking systems for University buildings and facilities; perform complex repairs and update records as required.

Estimate time and materials required for repair and renovation projects; assist in planning sequence of operations and determine methods to be used including but not limited to key cutting and duplication, adjusting or changing key combinations and recombining any lock within the current system; update records as required.

Open locks by use of lock picking tools, dismantling or other methods; repair locks by replacement of worn or broken parts or by adjustment or recombination of locks to the master / sub master system in use.

Repair, maintain and change safe and vault combinations.

Utilize key cutting machines, drills, saws, buffers and grinders, key gauges and locksmith tools.

Provide technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Possess a North Carolina State Locksmith License.

Experience

Work requires knowledge of hardware and electronic locking systems normally acquired through 4 years of experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of hardware and electronic locking systems.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
