Occupational Summary

Mechanic I performs routine mechanical and preventive maintenance duties in the inspection, maintenance and repair of grounds equipment. Assists in the placing of orders for parts, and supplies. Coordinates repairs with Grounds Supervisors and other personnel.

Work Performed

Assist in the repairs and adjustment of the engines and cutting mechanisms of a wide variety of grounds related equipment.

Assist in the preventive maintenance of transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, injectors, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, pumps and valves.

Assist in the repair of transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, injectors, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, pumps and valves.

Assist in the installation and adjustment of brakes, batteries, tires, safety devices, hydraulic hoses and fittings.

Assist in the overhauling of equipment.

Perform inspections of equipment for operating deficiencies and make routine adjustments where necessary.

Assist in securing tools, parts, and equipment as necessary.

Clean work areas after completion of job.

Assist in performing welding repairs.

Perform a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.

Pickup and deliver supplies and materials to various locations as required.

Complete and maintain all necessary documentation, computerized if necessary.

Assist grounds personnel in proper and safe operation of all equipment.

Follows all proper shop operational procedures and safety guidelines.

Perform duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled mechanical craft, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Compliance with Duke University Fleet Safety Policy.

Experience

One year of experience in maintaining commercial grounds equipment.
