Occupational Summary

Perform Journeyman level work in construction, renovation, repairs, and maintenance of all university facilities and do work according to the N.C.S.B.C. and provide technical assistance to project managers and direct lower level personnel

Work Performed

Assist carpenters in assigned work.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. A

Ability to read blueprints correctly, work from sketches and verbal instructions.

Ability to properly use different types of hoists, slings and related hardware.

Perform safety procedures of equipment being used.

Ability to erect scaffolding correctly and know terms and safety guidelines of the scaffolding.

Knowledge of the proper use of different types of wood.

Knowledge of the lumber and plywood grading system.

Ability to use engineered wood products, and correct application of them.

Knowledge of the different types of fasteners and guidelines for using them.

Ability to properly maintain maintenance and care of all tools used in this trade.

Perform general carpentry work in construction, repair, and renovation of floors, stairways, doors and windows.

Install various types of acoustical ceiling systems and be able to figure layouts for areas assigned.

Operation of various equipment, aerial lifts, skids, trencher, power generators, compressors, and forklifts.

Installation of stop forms for footings, walls, columns, and stairs.

Perform correct use of different types of reinforcement steel, beams and placement of such.

Install lock hardware using proper ADA guidelines in application.

Install various types of insulation, siding-including wood, metal and vinyl siding.

Install metal and vinyl gutters and down spouts.

Perform Journeyman level carpentry.

Install residential roofing and light commercial roofs and know the correct materials to be used.

Install shingles, roll roofing, shakes, tiles, metal and membrane roofs and install roof vents.

Perform installation of various types of stairs-wood, metal, and form concrete steps.

Perform installation of metal frames and doors in masonry walls and related hardware in locksets and closures.

Perform proper layout and installation of gypsum, metal pan, and suspension ceilings.

Install power-operated scaffolding and know the guidelines for usage.

Perform proper installation of vapor barrier in floors and attics.

Perform installation of trims of different types-wood, vinyl, metal.

Perform installation of pre-manufactured base and wall cabinets and countertops and know correction application and selection of them.

Perform layouts of footing and foundations according to N.C.S.B.C. guidelines-using laser, transits and water leveling devices for elevation of footing and foundations.

Understand the use of geometry and right angle trigonometry in building and layout.

Able to perform residential and commercial construction from blue prints and give technical advice to subcontractors.

Perform installation of all types of roofing-shingles, shakes, slate, tile, and rubber membrane and the correct application of each.

Adhere to the North Carolina State Building Code (N.C.S.B.C.)

Have knowledge of oxyfuel equipment and be able to perform shield metal arc welding, cutting and welding techniques and be able to instruct lower level personnel.

Perform fastening and assembly of structural components of metal building.

Perform project planning, time management, scheduling, estimating and management.

Acquire base skills for supervising personnel.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work required and education/training background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Completed forklift training. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Experience

Completed Level 7, Carpentry, Senior I program and passed all required components for this position or have 5 years experience in carpentry trade and be able to pass required test for Level 8, Senior Carpenter II.
