Occupational Summary

The Editor of Duke Magazine oversees editorial strategy for the university's flagship publication, with a circulation of 180,000. The magazine upholds the highest journalistic standards in showcasing the intellectual dynamism of a community of engaged, interesting and accomplished faculty members, students and alumni. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Marketing, Communications and Stewardship, the executive editor of the magazine will serve as a senior member of the department's management team.

Work Performed

Establishes a vision for the magazine and a structure to execute and sustain that vision.

Participates in leadership team meetings for Marketing and Communications and support collaborative work to support the overall department objectives.

Within marketing, communications, and stewardship, provides ongoing advice related to fundraising and engagement offerings, and joins in the meetings of the leadership team.

Responsible for incorporating Campaign themes and messaging into publication as needed.

Identifies and approves new initiatives for the magazine, including its digital representation.

Conceptualize multimedia elements, including audio, video, photography and graphics, in collaboration with the MCS creative team and the art director.

Represents the magazine to senior administrators, faculty members, alumni leaders, student groups, and other constituencies.

Extends the magazine's reach by sustaining contacts with key members of the campus community.

With the MCS creative and strategic teams, conceptualize the content and oversee the overall look, navigation, and features of the magazine's digital content.

Identify story ideas for features and standing departments by staying current on Duke news and personalities.

Assigns and serves as first editor for the feature component of the magazine.

Serves as the final reader for all copy being prepared for publication and for various stages of proofs.

Identifies and approves story ideas and writing assignments.

With art director, shape the ongoing design process, including approving page layouts.

Writes occasional major feature stories focusing particularly on institutionally important and sensitive topics.

Coordinate production details, including establishing best practices for staff and setting schedules, with the printer and staff specialist; conceive and monitor adherence to complex production schedules, including ensuring respect for deadlines.

Provides direct supervision to the senior writer; the staff writer; contributing freelance writers; and the staff specialist on business functions of the magazine, including tasks related to circulation, distribution, billing, payments, and advertising.

Sets appropriate standards and establishes a productive working environment for the staff.

Conduct employee performance planning and reviews.

Coordinate recruitment and hiring as needed.

Determines fiscal requirements, prepares budgetary recommendations, and monitors expenditures.

Negotiates and approves annual contracts for printing and design.

Serves as responsible financial representative for designated budget and support accurate financial reporting as coordinated by transactional initiator for department.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires 7 years of editorial experience in a publishing related setting to acquire skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks such as copy editing, researching manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, and content.
