Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of duties involved in the treatment and prevention of injury and in the care, evaluation and rehabilitation of Duke University athletes involved in intercollegiate sports.

Work Performed

Provide first aid treatment for participants of University intercollegiate sports; treat or refer injuries to the Student Health Office, Duke University Medical Center.

Develop and maintain a program of preventive physical care for Duke athletic teams; furnish safety equipment and supplies applicable to the respective intercollegiate sports.

Maintain liaison between the University Athletic Department and the Student Health Office, Duke University Medical Center, in arranging physical examinations and in coordinating and conducting post injury rehabilitation for athletes; compile and maintain statistical records of team injuries for the Athletic Department.

Assist and advise athletic team coaches in planning and instructing physical training programs for athletes.

Make travel arrangements for University athletic teams; arrange the transport and storage of team equipment; interface with the University Food Services in the preparation of special training menus. Instruct, supervise and review the performance of student trainers.

Study, evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment in physical training and physical therapy. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of the general principles of preventive physical care for athletes, first aid treatment and referral, and post injury rehabilitation normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine or other related Athletic Trainer program. National Athletic Trainers Association certification is required.

Experience

Work requires one year experience participating in various administrative, educational or medical support services such as coordinating arrangements for appointments and activities, participating in physical training tasks and instructions, providing first aid treatment or other related functions in order to acquire skills necessary to participate in a comprehensive sports medical program for intercollegiate athletes.
