Occupational Summary

Provide visionary and effective leadership for all horticultural operations at Sarah P. Duke Gardens incorporating superior principles and best practices in landscape architecture, garden design, ornamental horticulture, integrated pest management, collections management, interpretation, conservation, and sustainability.

Work Performed

Lead, direct and coordinate the development, design and layout of the Sarah P. Duke Garden applying principles of public garden design and ornamental horticulture to include evaluation and approval of proposed modification and expansion plans, selection, acquisition and installation of appropriate plantings and the planning of alternatives.

Coordinate the care and maintenance of the grounds and facilities, evaluate techniques and implement changes as required.

Exchange conceptual and operational plans and ideas with curators, horticulturists, landscape architects, consultants or others regarding garden design, layout, maintenance, interpretation and development.

Direct and coordinate establishment of schedules, task assignments, and allocation of man hours and equipment to ensure compliance with commitments; instruct and train new personnel in the principles of garden design, ornamental horticulture, integrated pest management, conservation, sustainability and collections management as appropriate.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds. Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance management, staff professional development, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of public garden management, ornamental horticulture and garden design generally acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.

Experience

Work requires the ability to lead, direct and coordinate the horticultural operations of a public garden acquired through a minimum of 5 years in progressive public garden experience, 3 years of required experience must be in a management or supervisory role.
