Occupational Summary

The Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Duke University, based in the Office of Alumni Engagement and Development (AED), is a senior leadership position responsible for leading fundraising efforts in support of Duke University's highest aspirational goals in key areas of research and education. This role involves managing a team of frontline fundraisers and administrative staff to effectively identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic support from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other stakeholders. The Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives will work closely with senior university leadership and the Provost's senior administrative team to align fundraising priorities with institutional objectives and ensure that key initiatives receive the necessary support to achieve transformative impact.

Work Performed

Provide strategic direction and leadership for fundraising efforts aimed at advancing Duke University's highest aspirational goals in key areas of research and education, with a focus on securing transformational philanthropic support from donors and institutional partners.

Collaborate with senior university leadership and the Provost's senior administrative team to identify and prioritize key fundraising priorities that align with Duke's mission and vision, developing comprehensive fundraising strategies and tactics to achieve success.

Lead and manage a team of frontline fundraisers and administrative staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure alignment with fundraising priorities and objectives.

Collaborate closely with colleagues across the Office of Alumni Engagement and Development, academic departments, research centers, Duke University Health System and other relevant units to ensure alignment of fundraising efforts with institutional priorities and maximize opportunities for philanthropic support.

Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors and institutional partners who have the capacity and interest in supporting key strategic initiatives, leveraging Duke's alumni network and philanthropic networks.

Engage with key stakeholders, including faculty members, researchers, administrators, alumni, and community leaders, to garner support for strategic initiatives and effectively communicate the impact of philanthropic investments.

Work closely with university leadership and development professionals to develop compelling fundraising proposals, case statements, and collateral materials that articulate the strategic importance and potential impact of key initiatives.

Cultivate strong, long-term relationships with donors and prospects, ensuring effective stewardship and recognition of their philanthropic contributions towards strategic initiatives at Duke University.

Establish metrics and benchmarks to track the progress and effectiveness of fundraising efforts for strategic initiatives, providing regular reports and updates to senior leadership and key stakeholders.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires Bachelor's degrer; advanced degree or professional certification in fundraising, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in institutional fundraising, preferably within a higher education or academic medical center environment.
