Occupational Summary

The Executive Director will serve as the Vice President/Vice Provost's (VP) principal advisor, thought partner and chief internal operations officer. The Executive Director reports directly to the VP and is responsible for advancing operational strategy and mission-specific objectives while serving as the VP's designee to fully represent the OCS's interests. In coordination with the VP, the Executive Director is responsible for leading all internal operations of the OCS. The Executive Director also represents the OCS staff and supports the VP as the chief advisor on all matters related to the OCS. In addition, the Executive Director advises the VP on strategic planning considerations and on ways to promote the OCS's mission to a wide array of internal and external audiences.

Work Performed

The Executive Director shall provide the VP with advice on all strategic planning endeavors and other initiatives to promote the OCS's research, educational, community engagement, operations, and external engagement missions. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring that excellence is maintained in these functional areas and that these operations and workflow adhere to the highest possible standards mandated by the University. The Executive Director will define, develop, and implement benchmarks and goals for key programmatic plans and practices to maintain progress and track progress.

The Executive Director will elevate issues, anticipate problems, actively problem solve and challenge ideas appropriately to create continuous conditions for OCS success.

Under the direction of the VP, the Executive Director will oversee and manage OCS budget, including all operational program budgets and financials to provide sound fiscal management. Develop and monitor budgets for the VP's review and approval.

The Executive Director will provide strategic counsel, reporting, data analysis and metrics to suggest initiatives to improve workflow, teamwork, and budget management.

The Executive Director is responsible for managing and trouble-shooting administrative issues and policies that affect staff and other OCS units. The Executive Director shall be responsible for resolving all issues within the OCS that do not rise to the level of the VP's review, including budget, HR, communications, and staff affairs.

The Executive Director shall provide oversight over the daily operations of the OCS and sound functioning of the CCAC. This includes governance issues, integrating workflows across the educational, research, operations, and external engagement subcommittees, and ensuring effective progress toward strategic goals.

The Executive Director will be responsible for cultivating collegial as well as strategic relationships with the most senior administrative executives across the University to promote OCS activities and programming.

The Executive Director will create greater cross functional operations for the OCS. This includes integrating Sustainable Duke with the existing core personnel in the Office of Climate and Sustainability for more seamless execution of primary tasks, better understanding of work boundaries, functional collaborative activity and streamlining communication flows.

The Executive Director will work with the VP's Executive Assistant to create agendas for the VP???s OCS, CCAC and other meetings to advance the OCS's strategic and operational goals.

The Executive Director will be expected to make presentations and otherwise represent the VP and OCS when needed at internal and external events, committees, and other gatherings.

The Executive Director will be the VP's designee for senior University and Board of Trustee meetings when the VP cannot be present.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

BA/BS in related fields required. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Ten or more years with direct sustainability experience or demonstrated experience with new program development and strategic planning in a university setting.
