Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of University Development, the Assistant Vice President of Foundation Relations directs and leads Duke foundation development activities. An experienced facilitator and strategist, he/she works closely with the University's senior administration, faculty, and staff in initiating, supporting, and strengthening relationships that provide significant value to university programs. The AVP supports university-wide initiatives, assists the foundation relations efforts of Duke schools, and develops strategies for building broad relationships with foundations.

Work Performed

Working collaboratively with Foundation Relations staff, school/unit/program directors of development, and the Office of Research.

Support, coordinate, encourage, and support campus-wide foundation gift and grant activities.

Analyze and recommend priorities and goals for foundation support.

Serve as foundation relations advisor to the school/unit/program development directors.

Establish an effective partnership with these directors and deans that is based on a mutual desire to increase foundation support for priority needs.

In this capacity, the AVP sets the standards for success and best practices. Initiate and maintain foundation contacts to strengthen the University's ability to submit proposals.

Determine prospect visits for the president, provost, and other senior leadership.

Connect key administrators and faculty as appropriate for the purpose of identifying new prospects, presenting proposals, and/or stewarding existing relationships.

Assume primary role in identifying, managing, and soliciting prospects for personal portfolio including major accounts, with a particular focus on The Duke Endowment and related Duke-family foundations.

Provide leadership in organizing, planning, and carrying out solicitation activity involving a wide range of participants, including the president, provost, deans, and other campus leaders.

Staff the president and other university officers on foundation fundraising calls.

Oversee prospect management for foundations, with a particular eye toward improving the process as needed and aligning the principles of foundation fundraising with those of individual fundraising as appropriate.

Maintain and promote tools that include team-based prospect management and allow the greater integration of foundations with individual prospect management where appropriate.

Recommend University-wide policies and procedural guidelines for foundation relations.

Direct planning, train and mentor, oversee activities, and evaluate performance of positions reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Foundation Relations.

Determine fiscal and personnel requirements of office and prepare budgetary recommendations.

Manage the daily administration of the office and prepare quarterly progress reports for the Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.

Experience

Ten or more years of foundation fundraising experience, particularly in a university setting

Skills

Leadership, initiative, creativity, team spirit, and sound judgment. Management/supervisory experience (both program and human resources). Ability to interact with the business and foundation communities. Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to grasp complex subjects, meet project deadlines, and build productive professional relationships. A dynamic, enthusiastic individual who enjoys working collaboratively.
