Occupational Summary

Administer a comprehensive Annual Giving program within the Office of University Development to maintain a high level of financial support for Duke University programs and projects from alumni, students, faculty and friends of Duke University; cultivate and solicit major gifts prospects for both restricted and unrestricted purposes.

Work Performed

Plan and direct a variety of fund raising programs to promote the concept of Annual Giving to include Anniversary Gift Program, Loyalty Fund, Duke Durham Program, campus solicitation, and solicitation of parents of Duke students; direct fund raising activities for the various University graduate schools. Coordinate the enlistment of alumni volunteer workers to assist in various aspects of University fund solicitation programs.

Direct and staff the Duke University Annual Giving Office and conduct appropriate financial planning sessions to maximize effectiveness of Annual Giving efforts.

Represent the University before Alumni Associations and other groups and individuals to enlist support for and explain fund raising activities supportive of University programs and projects.

Identify, cultivate and solicit top tier prospects with major gift ratings with an emphasis on $100,000 and higher, including some million dollar prospects; recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies of individual prospects, working with administration, faculty and volunteers as appropriate; meet with prospects and volunteers, traveling as necessary.

Facilitate relationships of key University trustees, deans, faculty and staff, including the President, with campaign prospects and volunteers; assist administrators and faculty in the recognition and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional and departmental priorities, University programs, personalities and events. Determine fiscal requirements of office and prepare budgetary recommendations; ensure expenditures are monitored, verified and reconciled.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
