Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice-president of Duke Alumni Engagement and Development for Global Engagement represents the University in cities, regions, and communities worldwide. This person is responsible for Regional and Industry-based engagement domestically and abroad for Duke Alumni, parents, friends, and in special cases students, and prospective students. This position supervises Regional Engagement, Industry-based Engagement, Regional Identity-based engagement, and helps DAED realize overall engagement and fundraising goals. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Operations and Engagement.

Work Performed

The Assistant Vice President of Duke Alumni Engagement and Development is expected to develop strategy, set goals and KPI, determine resources, manage budgets, hire, train, and manage a team or teams, determine expected outcomes for programs, and report results that support the priorities of DEAD. As a DAED AVP they will serve on the Engagement Leadership Team and work with the DAED Cabinet to develop goals, strategies, and operating plans for the organization. DAED AVPs are expected to collaborate with colleagues, teams, and projects within DAED and across campus. They are expected to represent Duke Alumni Engagement and Development and Duke University in connection with their areas of responsibility, and in other cases when assigned. DAED AVPs are expected to be advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in their team, within DAED, and across Duke University.

US Regional Engagement: Build, manage, and grow dynamic regional communities for Duke Alumni, parents, and friends in the United States with a focus on areas with large concentrations of alumni and strategic interest for the University. Ensure that both Regional Engagement staff and regional volunteer leaders understand the values, priorities, and goals of Duke, the DAED, and the Regional Engagement Program. Ensure that recent graduates, parents, and where appropriate students are welcomed and included in all DAED communities. Recruit, train, and manage volunteers in all core markets to help carry out the mission of the Regional Engagement Team. Coordinate the work of DAED Regional Engagement with schools, units, Duke Initiatives, and other DAED programs.

International Regional Engagement: Lead the engagement of international alumni, parents, friends, and in special cases student as part of the DAED Cross Functional Team on International Engagement and Fundraising. Develop and support alumni communities in countries and cities identified as global priorities by the University. Coordinate with all areas of the university working outside the United States to maximize the impact of international engagement activities and initiatives with alumni, parents, and donors.

Industry Communities: Build, manage, and grow dynamic Industry Communities for Duke Alumni and students, primarily utilizing online tools, develop opportunities for alumni to build meaningful professional connections, to get answers to professional/industry related questions, and to share current research and industry news. Create connections between the Industry Communities and related departments, centers, institutes, and programs at the University. Partner with Career Services to ensure that students have access to the Industry Communities for career exploration. Connect the Industry Communities to both alumni job opportunities and student job opportunities. Create pathways for alumni involved with Industry Communities to engage with other DAED and Duke programs.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Set goals, develop programs, design training, and create a culture for all Regional and Industry-based events, programs, and volunteer opportunities that are welcoming, inclusive, and actively embracing the diversity of the Duke Alumni and Duke Student Body.

Oversee regional programing and engagement opportunities for primary identity-based alumni groups. Coordinate this engagement with the Affinity and Identity Group staff and with leadership with the national boards of respective groups.

Ensure that all Regional and Industry-based programs are accountable for the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of DAED.

Collaborate with fundraising colleagues within DAED and across campus to increase philanthropic support for the University. Ensure that all team members and programs share relevant information with colleagues to assist with the fundraising process, and that regional and industry programs are appropriately utilized for both cultivation and stewardship of donors.

Ensure that Regional Engagement collaborates with university partners including Schools, Units, and Community Partners to encourage and support the engagement of alumni, parents, and friends in communities around the world. The AVP will serve as the primary contact for University partners involved with engaging alumni, parents, and friends in the cities when they live/work. When appropriate, this role can be delegated to a member of their team.

The AVP for Global Engagement will work with the Associate VP for the Duke Campaign to establish engagement goals for the campaign, develop systems to measure engagement, promote, engagement, and to celebrate the engagement of Duke Alumni, parents, and friends. In this capacity they will work with campus colleagues in DAED, Schools, and Units to help them establish and track engagement goals.

The AVP for Regional and Industry-based engagement will ensure that programs are expected have clear data and measurement plans. Regional and Industry-based engagement will work with DAED Business Intelligence to establish measurable goals, implement tool to track data, utilize data to design and evaluate programs, and will provide quantitative feedback to staff.

The AVP will determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations required to meet the goals of each program. They will ensure that members of their team monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds. Furthermore, they will ensure that budgeted funds are spent in accordance with University and DAED policy.

Lead or serve on both DAED and University teams, boards, committees, and taskforces as assigned.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires ten years of leadership experience to include five years of experience in alumni affairs, public relations, program administration, marketing or related field to acquire the advanced skills necessary to direct the planning and coordination of social, educational, and community service activities and events.
