Occupational Summary

The Assistant Dean, Marketing is responsible for leading marketing and communications strategies and functions that focus upon the building of the brand and national reputation of the School with ultimate oversight of the School's comprehensive communications and marketing programs. The Assistant Dean is also responsible for establishing and maintaining the School's Business Development Office. In support of these objectives, the Assistant Dean works closely with the Dean, and other School leaders, as well as the Duke news, communications, and marketing offices (university and medical center). The Assistant Dean leads a centralized support service, providing marketing, communications and business development expertise to help achieve the School's brand building, national reputation, and communications objectives. The Assistant Dean functions as the senior public relations officer for the Dean and Dean's Office.

Work Performed

Make recommendations to the Dean and implement tactics to give voice to strategic messages and priority communications.

Serve as an advisor and consultant to the Dean, Executive Vice Dean, associate deans and others on matters and mechanisms concerning internal and external integrated communications plans.

Create and maintain a unified official voice for the School.

Produce substantial draft messages for the Deans approval that are supportive of the Schools communications plan.

Serve as the executive director of the Schools Business Development Office.

Facilitate the identification, development and implementation of the Schools business and strategic partnership enterprise.

Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining revenue generating opportunities within the School, creating the organizational structures to sustain a business development enterprise and build support within the School community to expand the enterprise and its revenue sources.

Provide direction and oversight to the Schools video services function.

Provide direction and oversight for the Schools student recruitment advertising program including recruitment collateral material development for use by the Office of Admissions and Student Services.

Direct the Schools annual centralized professional conference program and ensure resources are appropriately allocated based upon the annual conference budgeting process. Included in these responsibilities are: annual tracking of allocated central funding for conference participation, DUSON brand marketing efforts at identified national conferences, regular reporting to the Dean and other senior leadership and post-conference reconciliation.

Provide editorial direction for Schools Magazine.

Function as the Schools brand manager.

Establish and set School communications standards for internal and external communications, including editorial policies and guidelines, graphic standards and templates, policies and procedures for displays and exhibits that are supportive of Duke Medicine branding standards.

Create and implement policies and procedures to ensure consistent use of the brand in all materials, presentations, web pages, emails, newsletters, videos, podcasts and any other item that includes the Duke School brand or carries the Schools message.

Participate in the Schools Administrative Leadership Group and attend other important meetings and events. Determine fiscal requirements; prepare budgetary recommendations; and monitor expenditures of budgeted funds.

Supervise and manage the performance of the Schools video production, and marketing and communications staff.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in related field required; graduate degree in related field preferred

Experience

Requires five years experience in public relations, marketing, or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer and lead publications, marketing and business development activities, preferably with experience in academic settings.

Skills

Possess strong business and marketing acumen capable of exercising leadership with external business partners and vendors. Exceptional and demonstrated skills in all marketing and communications disciplines, including use of all contemporary multi and social media communications approaches and strategies and exceptional writing skills require.
