Occupational Summary

The objective of the Acupuncture Preceptorship is to prepare clinicians trained in Acupuncture and Adjunctive Therapies to provide comprehensive clinical care to patients suffering from chronic pain in US large healthcare system settings, and to spearhead discovery in this field. To achieve this objective, the program will provide Experience in caring for patients in a university clinic setting Mentorship in clinical research, including manuscript preparation and publication in science citation indexed journals Opportunities to develop a network with other clinician-scientists who are studying acupuncture and adjunctive therapies for chronic pain management Per the North Carolina General Assembly Statute, the practice of acupuncture is defined as: The insertion of acupuncture needles and the application of moxibustion to specific areas of the human body based upon acupuncture diagnosis as a primary mode of therapy. Adjunctive therapies within the scope of acupuncture may include massage, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and electromagnetic treatment and the recommendation of herbs, dietary guidelines, and therapeutic exercise. The minimum length of the training program is 1 year, but can be extended for a second year upon approval of the Program Director. This is a term limited position.

Work Performed

The position involves the following:

Maestro-Care training.

Didactic training in clinical practice at various Duke Acupuncture and Adjunctive Therapies clinics.

6 half-day sessions per week

Three mentored clinical case presentations plus 1 case report according to recommended clinical case report guidelines over 6 months.

Three Journal Club presentations per year presented at the Center for Translational Pain Medicine or at multidisciplinary events.

Two mentored retrospective chart reviews or systematic reviews over 2 years Observations/rotations in clinics, and clinical and basic science laboratories that maintain a collaboration with the Duke Center for Translational Pain Medicine, including: Duke Acupuncture Clinic, Various Pain Research Labs, Duke Integrative Medicine Clinic, University of North Carolina (UNC) Program on Integrative Medicine, Duke Pain Medicine Clinic, UNC Orofacial/Maxilla Surgery Clinic, Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds, Pain Medicine Continuing Medical Education Lecture, Pain Seminars UNC Center for Pain Research, and Innovation Friday Pain Seminar Training.

Responsible Conduct of Research Credentialing: OSHA compliance (biohazard materials, blood-borne pathogens), HIPPA, CPR, and Ethical Management of Animals for Research (only if circumstances warrant).

Attend/present at national/international pain meetings (up to 2 meetings per year).
