Occupational Summary
The Alumni Careers, Mentoring & Campus Engagement Team is responsible for the careers and mentoring programming focus of AGN by welcoming students into the global Duke community and supporting students and alumni in their careers through mentoring, advising, and community building. The team partners across AED, the Professional Schools, and campus units such as the Career Center, QuadEx, Student Affairs, and academic programs and departments to provide alumni with lifelong career support and thoughtfully integrate alumni into the student experience, supporting their personal and career exploration. Team members will take leadership roles in AED cross-functional teams focusing on Alumni Careers and Young Alumni.
The Assistant Vice President of Alumni Careers, Mentoring, and Campus Engagement will provide leadership and strategic vision in the conceptualization, planning, development and execution of a comprehensive program that engages diverse alumni populations with Duke University and Duke Alumni Engagement and Development career, mentoring, and community building programs.
Work Performed
Provides leadership and strategic vision in the conceptualization, planning, development and execution of Duke Alumni Engagement and Development's (AED) efforts to support alumni and students on their professional journeys.
Supports the forward progress of ideas outlined in the AGN Task Force report that relate to alumni and student careers and mentoring.
Seeks opportunities to promote Duke's alumni-to-student engagement programs within the university community and beyond.
Leads the development of new initiatives and works to more thoughtfully knit alumni into the academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular life of the university, connecting students, alumni, staff, and faculty in their pursuit of lifelong career, professional, and personal development.
Collaborates with senior university leaders to develop guiding principles, conducts comprehensive needs assessments, and determines priorities.
Develops stronger ties to the Office of Student Affairs, the Graduate and Professional Schools, the Office of Academic Affairs and senior administrators and ensures alignment of student-to-alumni initiatives with university goals.
Develops and manages relationships with other campus partners to align campus initiatives to alumni engagement.
Serves as consultant to other Duke departments and programs developing programs which incorporate alumni as mentors, guest lecturers, and instructors to support student professional exploration and development.
Supervises the Alumni Careers, Mentoring, and Campus Engagement team to ensure alignment with the AED's strategic plans and university's mission, as well as team and individual goals. Oversee the team budget, compilation and preparation of operational and financial reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations.
Oversees the development and execution of major campus programs such as Homecoming, and Commencement Kickoff.
Serves as a member of AED's Engagement Leadership Team, reporting on program successes and challenges, and represents the AED at other university meetings and events.
Ensures team representation and leadership of AED Cross-Functional Teams related to the work of the team.
Provides leadership for Alumni Careers Cross-Functional Team.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires ten years of leadership experience to include 5 years in alumni affairs, public relations, program administration and analysis, marketing or related field to acquire the advanced skills necessary to direct the planning and coordination of social, education, and community service activities and event.
