Occupational Summary

Direct community and student engagement for Duke University to ensure positive and productive relations between Duke and the community.

Work Performed

Direct, develop and coordinate Duke University's relations with legacy partner neighborhood associations and partnerships, community based nonprofits and other community groups direct, develop and coordinate strategies and programs to achieve positive and productive relations between Duke and the community.

Evaluate needs of Duke Durham Neighborhood Partnership (DDNP) partners; seek opportunities to incorporate expertise of interested faculty, students, staff, retirees and alumni; establish cooperative relationships with University offices and departments that would serve to enhance DDNP.

Serve as a conduit of information for the University about community issues; serve as advocate for the University's position as well as serving as a source of information about community concerns; as appropriate, suggest and advocate for changes to University policies and positions.

Work with Office of News and Communications and DARA staff to develop and coordinate efforts to improve Dukes communications with the community.

Work with Duke Development staff and others to identify potential third party funding sources, including corporations, foundations and state and federal governments, to support DDNP and other initiatives; write and/or supervise the drafting of proposals, grant requests and application processes.

Represent the Vice President and, as appropriate, the President and other senior officers of the University at community forums, activities and events.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures.

Direct various personnel functions, including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree required.

Experience

Work requires the ability to manage and lead a team oriented program with multiple relations with diverse communities as well as an understanding of city, county, state and federal governments, generally acquired through five years related experience.
