Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex duties involved in the design, development, fabrication and testing of advanced electronic and computer equipment for use in research and related activities.

Work Performed

Perform specialized technical tasks to design, develop, fabricate and test specialized instruments, equipment and apparatus for use in research and related activities; make modifications to specifications as required to achieve desired results.

Provide engineering assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members for resolution of special problems; demonstrate techniques for operating specialized electronic equipment.

Provide electronics and computer support for interfacing analog experiments with digital computers; integrate analog and digital hardware with computer software in system development.

Monitor electronic equipment and technical services in assigned area; provide for maintenance of electronic and mechanical apparatus; oversee repair of malfunctioning electronic instruments, devices and equipment.

Collect information and dates through observation, experimentation, and various other methods; maintain files and manuals of information. Recommend and procure electrical, mechanical, video and optical equipment appropriate for laboratory needs; maintain records of expenditures for equipment and supplies.

Ensure applicable safety and efficacy requirements are met.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in an Engineering science or a related natural science such as Physics or Chemistry. Due to professional exemption, equivalent experience cannot be substituted for bachelor's degree.

Experience

Work requires three years related experience such as an Engineer sufficient to acquire competency in the application of knowledge in the related Engineering field. A master's degree in an Engineering science or a related natural science may offset the required three years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
