Occupational Summary

The Director of Planning & Design will provide leadership and direction for the University in all physical planning efforts as well as manage a team to provide design oversight on projects.

The Office of Planning & Design is responsible for facilitating planning efforts and design oversight for all of Duke University's new construction, renovations, infrastructure upgrades and major building renewal initiatives. The Office consists of a professional staff with experience and backgrounds in campus planning, architecture, space planning, landscape architecture, CAD and GIS.

With a high level of accountability, the Director of Planning & Design is responsible for developing, implementing and directing numerous planning efforts including master planning, precinct planning, project planning, space planning, space utilization and facility renewal planning. The Director leads a design oversight working group that ensures that projects are meeting all Duke standards in architecture, landscape and the overall aesthetics of the university. In addition, the Director manages all campus maps, drawings and building masters related to university facilities.

The Director of Planning & Design provides leadership and direction to the Planning & Design Group. Directs, manages, plans and administers the operational and administrative activities of the team. Responsible for overseeing the completion of studies within authorized budgets and schedules. Also responsible for ensuring departmental and university objectives are met while in the planning and design oversight phases and ensuring that the necessary administrators and stakeholders are kept well informed.

Work Performed

Directs master planning, precinct planning, project planning, space planning and facility renewal planning efforts for the University.

Develops conceptual planning and design studies for academic, administrative or environmental design needs on campus.

Leads a design oversight working group, including Advising University Architect and Campus Landscape Architect, that ensures that projects meet Duke standards in architecture, landscape and the overall aesthetics of the university.

Ensures that all new projects are in compliance with the University Master Plan.

Assists the Director of Project Management and Advising University Architect with the selection of design consultants.

Works effectively across functional lines in regards to planning, design and construction of projects.

Maintains the University Design Guidelines and approved design criteria.

Maintains building plans, campus maps and records for the university.

Applies space utilization metrics and best practices to assess academic and administrative space.

Assists the Capital Budget Office in developing the yearly Capital Plan.

Assists in facility renewal planning.

Supports established working groups and committees in regards to project planning and design.

Ensures that all state and local zoning and special permitting is in place and kept current.

Responsible for filing and gaining approval of required Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA), Parking Plan and Sidewalk Plan with the City of Durham.

Advises the Vice President for Facilities Management on all matters relating to planning and design.

Promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment that recognizes and respects diversity among staff.

Represents Facilities Management in University committees and meetings, as well as relevant external groups and individuals.

Presents to senior academic and administrative leadership and other campus stakeholders on planning, design and project related issues.

Keeps relevant of current trends, pedagogy and best practices in planning and design and educates staff on these practices.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in planning, architecture, or related field. Master's degree in planning, architecture or related field preferred.

Experience

Seven years of progressive managerial experience in planning in a large, complex organization.
