Occupational Summary

The Program Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) will provide vision and leadership for their unit's priorities for advancing equity,diversity and inclusive excellence across all domains of our mission centered in education, research and patient care. The Program Director will work closely with their unit leader (Department Chair or Institute/Center Director) and the School of Medicine's Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OEDI) to promote an equitable and inclusive culture as experienced by staff, faculty and learners in their unit. In units where a Faculty Vice Chair for EDI is appointed; the Program Director and Vice Chair will partner to advance EDI efforts. The successful Program Director will demonstrate integrity, strong leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and cultural humility.

Work Performed

Administration Serve as a member of an advisor to their unit's Executive Committee (in Departments, the leadership team consisting of Vice Chairs and administrative leaders; in Institutes/Centers, the senior management team) to promote effective integration of EDI priorities across key domains.

Serve as a member of the School of Medicine's EDI Unit Leadership Alliance, the formal community of Faculty Vice Chairs and Staff Leaders for EDI coordinated by the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OEDI).

Lead and advise their Unit's EDI Committee or Council. Develop and advance EDI priorities, strategies, implementation and monitoring of goals and accountability processes for their unit, in alignment with the School of Medicine's Dismantling Racism and Advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion goals.

Culture and Engagement Participate in vetted EDI educational and professional development programming that cultivates and strengthens awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to support their role and develop unit EDI strategies and plans.

Serve as accessible advocate for EDI for unit constituents. Listen to, and or triage staff, faculty and learner EDI concerns and opportunities. Serve as primary contact to disseminate and promote resources, initiatives and opportunities that enhance culture and empower individuals, including:

Education in EDI, including cultural humility, bias, racism, sexism, LGBTQ+, bystander/ upstander intervention, restorative practices

Concerns related to microaggressions, discrimination and harassment in partnership with HR/OIE

Affinity and professional development groups

Spotlights, such as Grand Rounds, panels, recognitions

Culture assessments, such as surveys and focus groups

Retention and Recruitment In collaboration with OEDI and appropriate resource partners, identify potential sources of structural racism, exclusion, and inequity in recruitment, hiring, retention, compensation, resources, and opportunities. Contribute to developing strategies to address and eliminates barriers by leveraging mechanisms and resources within the School of Medicine, Health System and University.

Remain abreast of SOM-wide process and practice enhancements to nurture, promote and recruit diverse staff, faculty and learners, advising unit leaders of new developments.

Engage unit leaders in efforts to enhance and identify solutions in retention (in-reach), recruitment (outreach), ranking, and turnover for relevant constituent groups.

Assist in creating diverse search committees and inclusive selection processes.

Proactively disseminate and promote professional development opportunities for staff, faculty and learners who are BIPOC, women, LGBTQ+ and other groups as appropriate.

Monitoring and Assessment In partnership with and guided by OEDI subject matter experts, monitor and communicate EDI metrics and outcomes focused on diversity, culture and equity using provided tools and data repositories.

Monitor diversity of relevant constituent groups.

Use relevant culture data (surveys, focus groups) to identify patterns and develop solutions to address exclusionary practices and processes. Prepare progress reports of EDI strategic initiatives.

Monitor unit constituents engagement in EDI education.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Generally requires a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Minimum of five years of directly related experience with progressive responsibility.

Skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, collaboration and team building that facilitates creative thinking, cooperation and rapport building with various levels of faculty, staff and students.

Demonstrated experience effectively communicating with constituents across a diversity of identity dimensions with both courage and humility; strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Ability to establish rapport and work cooperatively A broad understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituents is required.

Direct experience working with diversity councils, teams, groups or initiatives is desired.
