Occupational Summary

This position is designed to furnish a high level of professional legal service to Duke University and Duke University Health System, Inc. The Senior Associate University Counsel will conduct legal research, advise University and DUHS officials on legal aspects of policy, will handle general legal issues for the University and DUHS as assigned, and will interact with members of the legal profession, officials of the state and federal government and others as required to perform his or her duties and responsibilities.

Work Performed

Supervise and conduct research of state and federal legislation and administrative and court decisions; investigate legal problems and make recommendations on matters referred by the University Counsel.

Supervise and receive and investigate inquiries from University and DUHS administrators including matters related to intellectual property, construction law, contracting, policies, and other issues.

Supervise and assist in drafting contracts, agreements and other legal documents, and policies for compliance with state and federal law as well as University and DUHS policies and regulations.

Confer with University and DUHS employees on matters involving legal interpretation and decisions related to University activities, policy questions and operating problems.

Communicate with counsel retained by the University Counsel to represent the University and DUHS.

Serve on University and DUHS committees as designate of University Counsel.

Supervise two or more Assistant or Associate Counsels.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

LLB or JD degree. Licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina or become eligible to practice in North Carolina upon employment.

Experience

Must have at least 15 years' experience as an attorney.
