Occupational Summary

Manage and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in the operation of animal care facilities in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in the inventory, care, feeding and delivery of animals, the procurement and storage of necessary supplies and the maintenance of related equipment and buildings.

Plan, schedule and assign work to ensure efficient utilization of manpower, equipment and facilities.

Plan and conduct formal and on the job training programs for caretakers and technical personnel leading to certification.

Develop and recommend operating policies and procedures for facilities.

Conduct regular inspections of animal facilities to ensure the maintenance of required sanitation standards; observe and report noticeable or unusual changes in animals.

Advise faculty and research staff concerning animal techniques and procedures ensuring compliance with U.S.D.A. and N.I.H. guidelines on the care of research animals and facilities.

Maintain inventory records and ensure proper levels of consumable supplies and animal caging; prepare statistical reports and participate in cost study analyses.

Manage various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology, Animal Science or related field.

LATG certification required; CM certification preferred.

Experience

Work requires seven years of experience in laboratory animal resources, to include four years in managerial experience

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
