Occupational Summary

Assist foreign students, faculty, staff, and employees of Duke University, Medical Center, and Health System in complying with governmental regulations related to the maintenance and processing of immigration and other governmental forms. This position involves working with highly confidential and sensitive information.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate immigration and visa related functions for foreign students, faculty, staff, and employees; ensure maintenance of proper status and process various forms including tax classification forms and extensions of time and permission to work requests; assess and process requests in order to issue documents using the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Securitys Student & Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS).

Serve as a resource to faculty and staff members throughout Duke University, Medical Center, Health System, and affiliates regarding visa matters; answer non routine visa questions and resolve related problems.

Maintain liaison with government agencies, sponsoring organizations, and foreign embassies to facilitate visa documentation and employment authorization for foreign students, scholars, faculty, staff, employees and their families.

Represent Duke University, Medical Center, and Health System at regional and national professional meetings, as needed.

Work with other office staff to analyze, recommend, and implement policies and procedures.

Compile information and prepare various reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Plan, assign, check, and approve work performed by more junior staff.

Assist in the training and instruction in methods and procedures.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Requires 2 years of experience in a setting, which provides exposure to compliance and/or regulatory functions, preferably with immigration, and visa related functions in an academic, medical center, or university environment. Prefer 1 year of experience living, working, or studying abroad, or similar experience with foreign nationals in the U.S.
