Occupational Summary

The incumbent will serve as Associate Dean for Research Development and Director of Research Development for the Duke University School of Medicine. In the Associate Dean capacity, the individual provides strategic oversight to Research Development activities across the School, participates in relevant School of Medicine and Duke Medicine committees, and reports to School of Medicine leadership on Research Development activities. In the Director capacity, the individual leads a School of Medicine-wide effort to raise the quality of submitted applications for research grant opportunities from federal and national funding sources. The primary focus of the office is facilitating development of large, complex research grant applications in response to funding opportunities identified by faculty or by Research Development, secondary focus is to provide review and advice to selected individual investigators for their research grants, and the third area of focus is to offer writing training to faculty more broadly. The Director leads these efforts, hires, mentors, and supervises Research Development staff. The Director holds a strong institutional perspective and the aptitude for building and leading an operation that successfully facilitates development of competitive research grant applications from faculty across the entire School of Medicine.

Work Performed

Hire, mentor, and supervise Research Development personnel, including overseeing and guiding their involvement in development of complex and individual grant applications and their review and editing of grant components, including technical sections.

Advise faculty on suitability of and approaches to large, multidisciplinary funding opportunities from federal and non federal sources that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise.

Identify Duke faculty to lead and/or collaborate on multidisciplinary proposals and facilitate development of appropriate teams of faculty investigators to pursue these opportunities.

Oversee and support development of individual and complex funding proposals through effective interactions with all involved parties and by providing proposal management, proposal editing and/or writing integration service, program development, budget development advice, and high level advice and guidance.

Work with individuals at all levels in the organization to ensure successful integration of all grant application components and full compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements.

Work with School of Medicine leaders to identify opportunities to strengthen faculty grant applications and work collaboratively to implement solutions.

Participate in relevant institutional committees and working groups.

Report to institutional leadership regarding Office of Research Development activities.

Develop and offer to School of Medicine faculty and others as appropriate novel training and workshop opportunities designed to raise the overall quality of applications submitted from Duke, to better prepare faculty to lead complex multidisciplinary research efforts, and/or to meet other needs as identified through collaboration with other School of Medicine leaders.

Represent the School of Medicines research development effort to other Duke entities, nationally, and internationally.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master degree in physical sciences, biomedical/health sciences or social sciences/humanities

Experience

Minimum of seven years of experience working with faculty in an academic or research setting, including a track record of effective communication, as well as demonstrated familiarity with all aspects of extramural grants and/or contracts. Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

Proven ability to work effectively with researchers and to interact productively with federal funding agencies (NIH, NSF, etc.)

High level relationship building skills, including track record of effective interaction with individuals at all levels in the organization

Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to convene and motivate a team regardless of supervisory relationships.

Strong organizational and customer service skills.

Ability to organize, analyze and interpret complex scientific, medical or technical data is required; proven ability to make complex information understandable to a broad range of audiences is desirable.

Must possess excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills while balancing the needs of multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, often deadline-driven environment where priorities change in response to external needs and opportunities Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, offering appropriate leadership and guidance, including motivating those who have no supervisory relationship.
