Occupational Summary

Manage and coordinate activities of the Duke University bookstores and administer established policies and procedures applicable to efficient and profitable store operations.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate activities of Duke University Bookstore to include sales and inventory of bookstore commodities, maintenance of cash receipts and records and preparation of pertinent financial reports.

Forecast store commodity requirements by communicating with faculty and analyzing curriculum requirements; establish sources of commodities by initiating action and following through to ensure required support.

Promote book collecting in the University by continual liaison with book clubs, library staff, departments, and faculty, and coordinate activities with book staff.

Assist in preparing comprehensive reports reflecting work activity and financial status. Coordinate with representatives of other stores operations and with vendor agencies to provide adequate and timely resources and personnel support.

Schedule and assign work to assure the efficient utilization of manpower, equipment, and facilities to operate the bookstores.

Assist in training all book personnel.

Recommend various personnel actions relating to stores operation including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires three years related retail operations, merchandising, business administration or accounting experience to acquire skills necessary to plan and supervise the day to day operations of a university retail book shop.
