Occupational Summary

Manage and coordinate the activities of the technical and information services work group at the Duke University Marine Lab (DUML), and administer policies and procedures applicable to efficient and trouble free operation.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate activities of the technical and information services work group which provides library, media production, information systems, electronic and related support services to the DUML.

Plan and schedule work of the group ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Provide for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and calibration of scientific and research instrumentation, scientific apparatus, and various computer, audiovisual, telecommunications, and general laboratory electronic equipment at the Marine Lab.

Maintain spare parts inventory, service documentation and consumable supplies for equipment.

Maintain electronics and technical research shops to provide support for technical functions at the Marine Lab; design and fabricate unique scientific equipment and apparatus as required. Provide technical assistance and consultation to faculty, support staff, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Prepare operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.

Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of technical and information services generally acquired through an Associate degree in a related field.

Experience

Work requires the ability to manage and coordinate the activities of a technical/information services work group, generally acquired through five years related experience.
