Occupational Summary
The Head of Research Operations provides oversight and leadership of all aspects related to the DCRIs operations. The incumbent will serve as a member of the DCRI Senior Management Team (SMT), contributing to all aspects of DCRIs overall strategy, culture, project delivery, prioritization, and resource allocation. This includes but is not limited to developing and implementing plans for the operational infrastructure in the form of policies, systems, processes and staff engagement to improve the overall operations and effectiveness of the organization.
Work Performed
Operations Management
Oversees and manages the operational and strategic progress of the DCRI functional groups, which encompasses Statistics, Technology & Data Solutions, Clinical Events/Safety/Imaging, key DCRI operational systems such as eTMF and CTMS, and all operational groups (Health Services Research, Government & Networks, Industry, and MegaTrials).
Identify opportunities to leverage and/or redesign processes, tools, and technology to improve and/or increase efficiency of DCRI operations.
Participates in and provides leadership for DCRI wide initiatives that seek to enhance operational and translational capabilities, services and outcomes.
Work with faculty, functional group leaders and staff of the DCRI to engender a culture of accountability where specific goals are developed, communicated and measured and expectations are clear.
Assists the DCRI Executive Director in the development and implementation of DCRI strategies and goals by providing recommendations regarding all major strategic and financial decisions.
Provides guidance to direct reports in ensuring DCRI staff within their groups are engaged and provided growth opportunities, delivering quality work, successfully building relationships with funders and partners, developing operational plans and timelines for all projects and initiatives, and ensures progress of the goals are being achieved.
Ensures resources are managed in an effective way across all of the operational groups to achieve financial and business objectives.
Fosters engagement, team building and consensus across the DCRI and external research community through regular meetings, collaboration, and other professional methods (i.e. attendance at scientific meetings).
Works with CFO and Grants & Proposal Services (GPS) to assess fiscal requirements, develop study budgets, manage expenditures, and ensure payments are managed by the respective teams.
Collaborates effectively with the operational leaders across the DCRI and with leadership in the broader School of Medicine community to advance the mission and objectives of the DCRI.
Represents the DCRI in a variety of external forums including industry meetings, professional association meetings, and public private partnerships in order to foster the cultivation of industry relationships, which may benefit the goals of DCRI.
Finds ways to utilize other resources within Duke to create bidirectional efficiencies per the One Duke model and facilitates the One Duke mindset.
Communicates with the all of DCRIs functional group leaders to provide strategic direction on the vision of the DCRI and equip them to effectively communicate to their teams.
Act as the Lead Crisis Manager for DCRIs Business Continuity purposes.
Strategic & Business Development.
In partnership with the DCRI Executive Director, and DCRI faculty, serves as an operational leader in the DCRIs effort to develop business opportunities with key sponsors/funders of research as well as other DCRI collaborators, academic groups, partners, and vendors.
Works closely with Duke Faculty to identify and develop potential sources of sponsorship for the research initiatives of the DCRI.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of strategic networks of academic and commercial collaborators globally.
Works with GPS, Faculty and Operational Leaders to drive new business opportunities and provide accurate budgeting and clear scope.
Interacts and works directly with Key Accounts and/or customers to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the life cycle of the project.
Personnel Management
Ensures appropriate resourcing and prioritization that aligns with the overall mission of the organization. Leads and inspires operational personnel to effectively achieve objectives and navigate challenges in an efficient and productive way with clear expectations.
Identify and recruits key staff in collaboration with DCRI Human Resources. Oversees, directs and effectively utilizes all operational resources through direct reports and other managers.
Oversees performance management for operations staff including the development of job specific performance standards, individual development plans and annual performance evaluations.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor degree required. Bachelor degree in a health related discipline (i.e., nursing, pharmacy or allied health profession) preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in clinical research operations in a coordinating center environment (including 5 years in a leadership capacity) in the contract research, pharmaceutical, medical device, or biotechnology industry or in an academic research organization.
Leadership experience in both academic and corporate environments. P&L management experience preferred.
A Master degree may substitute for two years of relevant experience.

Excellent leadership & management skills. Business acumen and experience at a senior leadership level.
