Occupational Summary

The Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff (AVP/COS) supports the Vice President of DCA in shaping and directing the University's relations with the immediate external community, including Durham and the region, and strategic long-term planning in efforts to achieve Duke's goals as established in 2020.

Work Performed

Represents DCA in major University committees and establishes meaningful working relationships with key stakeholders, including community members, students, alumni, and colleagues within academics, health, and administration.

Lead and guide initiatives that are focused on coordinating and streamlining university/community partnerships and relationships. Play a key role in elevating the mission and work of DCA within the university. Leads, in partnership with DCA leaders, the creation and implementation of the strategic councils with a focus on housing, health, education employment and community, comprised of university and community experts. Develops a set of indicators based on local economic data and statistics that can demonstrate progress and outcomes.

Develop and oversee the strategic deployment of DCA resources (financial, intellectual, and research/scholarship) within the community.

Operationalize the current strategic plan and implementation of institutional initiatives related to community engagement (such as task force recommendations). Guide future planning processes and special projects for the office.

Advise the Vice President regarding key constituencies (internal and external, public and private), providing context and background information on issues and coordinating research, projects, meetings and initiatives.

Elevate community issues and challenges (including crisis situations) to the surface for consideration, ensure appropriate action, and communicate results throughout DCA and/or the university.

Serve as a thought partner and strategic advisor to the Vice President, standing in on meetings, challenging ideas and offering a different perspective, and following up on action items with the team accordingly.

Guide a communications program to ensure that all Durham and Community Affairs units (Neighborhood Partnerships and Community Development, Civic Engagement & Educational Collaborations, and Business Services, Research and Advancement) consistently articulate Duke's vision for civic and community engagement.

Partner with the Office of News and Communications and other units in developing ways to broadly tell the stories of community/civic engagement to the media, alumni, and other audiences beyond the Duke University.

Develop and deliver branding of DCA, and sub-branding including the Center, Partnership Platform and the Duke Durham Neighborhood Partnership (DDNP).

Oversee DCA communications efforts by working with the team to establish communications and branding goals.

Oversee day-to-day functions of the DCA office, having authority for decisions, i.e., budgetary, personnel.

Leads a growing team, including change management and organizational development and effectiveness.

Balance and influence multiple priorities and individuals, directing the central coordination of all functions and activities of the office.

Serve as a coach and advisor to a growing Durham and Community Affairs team, providing leadership and direction for change management initiatives, project management, and program development.

Convene and lead regular meetings of the DCA leadership team

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree in business administration, public sector administration, public policy, or other related field strongly preferred.

Experience

Requires a minimum of 8 years of experience in a highly complex, matrixed organization such as a research university.
