Occupational Summary

The Assistant General Manager, Retail Stores will take a lead role in providing organizational and operational direction for the overall activities of Duke University's major general merchandise retail stores including the University Store, Lobby Shop and other designated operations including but not limited to, merchandising, inventory management, procurement, financial management, expense and loss control, profit management, budget planning, organizational design, staff development, personnel and supervision, performance planning.

Work Performed

Assist in managing the overall activities of the University Store.

Manage the Lobby Shop and other designated operations, including, but not limited to, customer service, staff development, financial management, merchandising, display, sales, inventory levels, loss prevention, record keeping and preparation of pertinent financial reports.

Assist in managing the ordering, receiving, storing, pricing, advertising, packaging and researching of all merchandise selections; assist in the formulation of policies related to marketing of merchandise.

Meet with vendors to determine product purchase selection and quantities.

Coordinate transfer of merchandise.

Coordinate the proper entry of order data in the POS system.

Coordinate all matters related to receiving records, invoices, transfers, shortage and damage reports and purchase orders.

Plan and coordinate all sale programs; manage and coordinate special events.

Coordinate efforts related to lean inventory management and the increase in turns of store merchandise.

Coordinate merchandise allocation from the Distribution Center to the retail operations.

Work with the team to develop plans for display of merchandise.

Ensure that clearance and other discontinued merchandise is continually managed and marketed properly to enhance sell through.

Prepare annual budget for the Lobby Shop of anticipated sales, expenses, and inventories; review financial statements regularly to monitor results and to identify potential problems and areas needing improvement.

Recommend the acquisition of equipment and facilities instrumental to the performance of operations.

Plan work schedules, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing for performance of duties.

Assist in directing various personnel matters including, but not limited to, organizational design, hiring, training, performance appraisals, promotions and transfers.

Manage periodic physical inventories.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Generally requires a Bachelor's degree in business, operations management, marketing or related field required.

Experience

Minimum of six years upper level retail management, merchandising or related leadership role in a high volume retail environment required. Proven, successful retail track record required.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
