Occupational Summary
Exercise management responsibility over University architectural activities relating to the fulfillment of Duke University physical planning commitments.
Work Performed
Responsible for the formulation, interpretation and administration of University physical planning policies and practices.
Review proposed architectural policies and procedures, evaluate and serve in an advisory capacity to various committees and to other members of the University community as appropriate.
Analyze architectural needs of University, Medical Center, Hospital and research facility construction projects; plan and integrate organization, design and execution of architectural activities; recommend the establishment or alteration of University standards for all phases of construction, selection of sites and functional use.
Coordinate architectural input regarding project; evaluate feasibility, risk and cost involved in architectural alternatives; serve as principal liaison officer between the University and project architects, contractors and agencies retained for service on individual projects.
Assure compliance on the part of architects and contractors with University standards of quality and function of facilities and with existing contractual terms.
Establish and maintain contacts with outside organizations such as government agencies, professional organizations and other educational institutions to aid and foster physical planning activities.
Coordinate and monitor inspection of design and construction activities through completion to ensure compliance with all contractual obligations as well as the maintenance of sound architectural standards. Direct various personnel functions including, but not restricted to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
