Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (AVP), is part of Duke's Office for Institutional Equity and is responsible for the strategic oversight of education and support programs for Duke University and Duke University Health System. This position will have supervisory duties and work closely with the Vice President to operationalize OIE's education and support mission. The AVP will collaborate with the Office for the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement (OVPFA) to offer faculty development resources and programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion, including hiring and search practices, developing a positive culture, responding to sexual misconduct and anti- racism and also work closely with the Duke University Health System on the execution of their goals to advance diversity, inclusion and belonging for providers and patients. The AVP will have broad oversight of OIE communications, strategic coaching, curriculum, training, programs and support for leaders throughout Duke on sustaining and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts including the University's ability to attract retain and develop more diverse faculty and staff, educate the entire community on anti-racism and enhance student diversity.

Work Performed

The Assistant Vice President, under the direction of the Vice President, and in collaboration with OIE staff, the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, Student Affairs, Human Resources and other University and Health System staff, will perform the following activities:

Develop a strategic plan for the delivery of diversity, equity and inclusion education and support across Duke University and the Duke University Health System.

Provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the development of OIE workshops, presentations, learning modules and other efforts that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.

Research, develop and implement processes to measure the effectiveness of OIE education, support, coaching and other interventions for faculty, staff, and students across the University and Health System.

Assist the Vice President to develop and maintain a strategy to support communication efforts, including the OIE newsletter and website.

Provide consultation to deans, senior leaders, managers and supervisors on designing and implementing department-wide and institution-wide objectives related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Provide support, advice and consultation to Duke University departments and schools in their efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion among undergraduate, graduate and professional school students.

Assist in research, development and implementation of strategies to measure the success of institution-wide progress on creating a diverse and equitable work and learning environment.

Assist the Vice President in the leadership of and support for diversity, equity and inclusion professionals across Duke and develop a system for oversight of the various efforts across the highly decentralized organization.

Provide coaching and consultation to individuals and groups with respect to cultural challenges and conflicts.

Collaborate with the compliance functions within OIE to provide support during or following an investigation or informal resolution process.

Support the Vice President on the oversight of two signature Duke University programs, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and the Samuel DuBois Cook Society Annual Dinner.

Provide other diversity and equity services through programming, advocacy, and support, as deemed appropriate to the functioning of the Office for Institutional Equity.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A Master's Degree in higher education, sociology, social work, psychology or other related field is required. A Ph.D. is preferred.

Experience

Minimum 10 years of experience working with a complex organization on strategic efforts to advance the mission of equity, diversity and inclusion, some of which includes management level and supervisory experience is required.

Skills

Outstanding listening, collaboration and team building skills that facilitate coordination and cooperation.

Ability to lead with both courage and humility.

Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering diversity, equity and inclusion programming.

Proven capacity to analyze and implement diversity, equity and inclusion strategies.

Demonstrated skill in conflict resolution and problem-solving.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse, complex, sometimes ambiguous and highly decentralized organization to provide leadership for cultural change.

Ability to be resilient, flexible and creative in approaching complex problems.

Ability to establish rapport and work cooperatively with various levels of faculty, staff, students, and outside entitites.

Ability to assess interventions, measure effectiveness and design tools to evaluate success.
