Occupational Summary

Direct all phases of a development program for the School including major gifts, annual fund and stewardship; serve as primary liaison to the School's Board of Visitors, and provide oversight of the Alumni Relations program.

Work Performed

Work with the Dean to develop a strategic plan, addressing the fundraising needs of the school.

Define fundraising priorities and giving opportunities with attention to strategic needs of the school, and synergies with affiliated centers and programs and other schools.

Assist administrators and faculty in the recognition and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional and departmental priorities, University programs, personalities and events.

Direct overall activities of the External Affairs staff and oversee corporate & foundation relations, individual giving major gifts, annual giving, and stewardship alumni relations, alumni information systems, outreach events and development services.

Manage a portfolio of the school's top prospects and donors.

Develop strategies for major gift solicitations; identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts from prospective individual donors.

Cultivate and present proposals to corporate and foundation prospects.

Collaborate and coordinate fundraising initiatives and prospect management with the other schools and units of Duke University.

Maintain and develop procedures in coordination with and consistent with established recording procedures of the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgment and follow up on all private gifts to the school.

Oversee endowment agreements.

Serve as principal liaison to the Schools Board of Visitors.

Work in concert with the External Affairs staff to provide engaging and dynamic Board Meetings and leadership volunteer activities.

Plan and schedule work for the External Affairs group ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, supervision, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Oversee all endowment agreements, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements and donor stewardship.

Determine fiscal requirements for the External Affairs office; prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor expenses.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Minimum 8 years of progressive fundraising experience and leadership success. Exposure to all facets of fundraising, including annual giving, major gifts and successful relationship building with key constituencies. Experience with identification, cultivation and solicitation of principal gift prospects ($1M+) preferred.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Skills

Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with academic environment and Duke University. Experience managing, motivating and retaining a staff with multiple priorities and within the context of a complex university development system. Ability and willingness to travel.
