Occupational Summary

Plans and manages time, money, staff and other resources to achieve the goals of the department. Responsibilities include managing the department's operations, staff and student budget; coordinating operations of the department with other departments and units of the Perkins Library System and with other Duke libraries; and improving, simplifying, and enhancing services to the department's internal and external customers.

Work Performed

Provide the specific knowledge, critical thinking, management and teamwork skills essential to a high performance department.

Establish goals in support of the Librarys mission to provide excellent resources and services.

Lead the department to deliver quality services and products to its internal and external customers by creating a structure that reflects the Mission and Values of Perkins Library and involves staff in decision making, especially in decisions they will have to implement.

Work proactively, constructively, and collaboratively to identify, define, and resolve problems; establish goals and priorities; share resources; and develop plans that focus on library wide issues, promote excellence in customer service, and advance the Librarys provision of information services.

Assess the performance of staff members on an ongoing basis by providing regular feedback.

Prepare reports and analyses that set forth progress, trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusion in terms of staffing, equipment, and training.

Perform various personnel actions including recommendations on hiring, salary enhancements, promotions, upgrades, and transfers.

Carry out special projects and perform other related duties as assigned by the University Librarian and Vice Provost for Library Affairs.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires a bachelor's degree.

Experience

Requires 6 years of experience with at least 3 years of that experience in management, preferably in an academic or research library.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
