Occupational Summary
Position serves as the Captain of the 77' oceanographic research vessel R/V Shearwater, operated by Duke University and based at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. Reporting to the Marine Operations Manager, the Master is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the vessel to include navigation, operation and maintenance in support of scientific research, education and community outreach. The essential function of the Captain position is to provide service rendered primarily to aid in the operation of the vessel as a means of transportation. Position serves in a supervisory role to vessel crew members. Seagoing and shore efforts will be split between frequent cruises. Some work on weekends and holidays will be required.
Work Performed
Responsible for the safety of the vessel and persons on board in accordance with all applicable federal, state, local and Duke University regulations and policies.
Directs and attends all underway safety drills and vessel inspections.
Responsible for navigation, operation, maintenance and repair of vessel and associated equipment in support of scientific research projects, education and community outreach.
Serves as chief navigator/helmsman for all docking and hazardous navigational situations.
Supervises vessel crew to ensure proper conduct and completion of assigned duties.
Sets watch and work schedules.
Coordinates crew training.
Keeps logs and records in accordance with institution and USCG directives.
Completes safety checklists and inspections prior to any underway operation.
Responsible for the management of the vessels all medical and lifesaving equipment.
Coordinates cruise planning efforts with science party, faculty, marine technician and Marine Operations Manager to safely and effectively execute scientific missions and educational programs.
Is responsible for actively producing, managing and operating within the budget developed with the Marine Operations Manager.
Responsible for continuous development and adhering to a prescribed maintenance program including: scheduling and oversight of shipyard overhauls; documenting routine mechanical and structural maintenance and arranging of periodic regulatory inspections closely coordinated with Marine Operations Manager.
Serves as back up Captain of small vessels owned and operated by Duke University.
Participation in a Chemical Testing Program as defined by 46 CFR parts 4 and 16, 33 CFR part 95 and 49 CFR part 40.
Position requires international travel.
Valid passport is required.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Marine Credential:
Master of Self-Propelled Vessels Of Less Than 100 Gross Register Tons (GRT)Upon Near Coastal Waters
USCG Medical Certificate
USCG approved Drug Test
FCC Radio Operator License
CPR and First Aid training certificate
High School Diploma or equivalent
Prefer Maritime Academy graduate or degree in science, mathematics or engineering
Experience
5 years operating a vessel of equivalent size or greater.
2 years supervisory experience (5 years preferred).
Must understand the principles of good seamanship and marine maintenance.
Knowledge of maintenance and operation of diesel and gasoline engines, pumps, compressors, generators, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, winches and other equipment common to research vessels.
Preferred Experience Experience with oceanographic research cruises and methods Working knowledge of common oceanographic equipment (e.g., CTD, ADCP, sonars), as well as over the side deployment and recovery of research gear (e.g., moorings, buoys, gliders, trawls)
