Occupational Summary

Position serves as the Captain of various small (50 gross register tons or less) Oceanographic Research and Passenger vessels operated by Duke University and based at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. Reporting to the Marine Operations Manager, the Captain is responsible for the safe and effective operation of vessel to include navigation and operation in support of scientific research, education and community outreach. Some work on weekends and holidays will be required.

Work Performed

Responsible for the safety of the vessel and persons on board in accordance with all applicable federal, state, local and Duke University regulations and policies.

Directs underway safety briefing.

Responsible for navigation and operation of vessel and associated equipment in support of scientific research projects, education and community outreach.

Serves as chief navigator/helmsman.

Completes operational checklists and inspections prior to any underway operations.

Interacts with faculty, passengers and/or science party in a professional and customer service oriented way to ensure safe and effective operation in support of scientific and educational programs.

Participation in a Chemical Testing Program as defined by 46 CFR parts 4 and 16, 33 CFR part 95 and 49 CFR part 40.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Marine Credential:

Master of Self Propelled Vessels of Less Than 50 Gross Register Tons (GRT) Upon Near Coastal Waters.

USCG Medical Certificate.

USCG approved drug test.

FCC Radio Operator License.

CPR and First Aid training certificate.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Five years operating vessels of equivalent size or greater; Experience working upon waters local to the Duke University Marine Lab.

Working knowledge of common scientific sampling equipment e.g., gliders, trawls, hand operated water samplers, etc.)
