Occupational Summary

Coordinate and participate in a variety of activities involved in the development of new financial system functionality and support of existing functionality, financial user support and maintenance of related policies and procedures.

Work Performed

Assist Director of Accounting Systems Administration in the daily supervision of the department personnel and also in strategic planning for the department.

Serve as the department lead in the development and implementation of new accounting functionality, and coordination between Administrative Systems Management, the Financial Services Division, Office of Information Technology, and operating departments.

Convey information regarding the new functionality to the University and Health System and provide necessary ongoing support to affected system users.

Maintenance of SAP R/3 G/L accounts, Cost Elements, Commitment Items and related configuration.

Analyze and recommend revisions of accounting policies and procedures; prepare and maintain current accounting policies and procedures for reference throughout the University and Health System.

Serve as liaison between University and Health System departments and all corporate accounting functions concerning financial systems, policies and procedures and accounting code structure.

Assist in the review of the existing SAP R/3 account code structure (cost objects and G/L Accounts) to clarify purpose and articulate philosophy of their usage; recommend modification to structure as appropriate; assign accounting codes to ensure consistency with established purpose and philosophy; monitor on going utilization of account codes to ensure proper usage and to correct inconsistencies.

Develop, coordinate and/or participate in training covering a variety of areas included, but not limited to, appropriate use of accounting codes, utilizing SAP R/3 reports and utilizing newly implemented functionality in the financial systems.

Assist financial users with complex questions and problems that can not be handled by other personnel in the department.

Serve as a backup on maintenance of user access to the SAP R/3 and Business Warehouse systems.

Serve as backup for oversight of maintenance of financial master data for the Duke University Health System and Duke Clinical Research Institute.

Participate in special assignments and projects when necessary.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or a directly related field.

Experience

Work requires the ability to participate on financial system development and upgrade projects generally acquired through six years of progressive experience working in a financial systems development/support environment.
