Occupational Summary

Develop and implement comprehensive, strategic communication plans in support of Duke's central administration offices and manage the editorial production for Working@Duke's print, online and digital channels.

Work Performed

Develop and implement communication strategies and plans to support goals and initiatives of Dukes central administrative units such as Human Resources, Duke Police, Parking and Transportation Service, Facilities, and Financial Services.

Create and maintain a unified voice through Working@Dukes print, online and digital media in collaboration with the administration.

Direct the Working@Duke branded communication channels to ensure they meet program objectives; determine content and deadlines; supervise production activities of publications.

Develop and promote LiveSafe Mobile program.

Execute strategies to increase awareness and use of LiveSafe Mobile app among students, faculty, and staff.

Present to schools and departments to promote download and use of app.

Identify and present recommendations to the Emergency Management Steering Committee to update and expand functionality for the app.

Manage introduction of dashboards to new groups as appropriate (Facilities, Athletics, etc.).

Work with vendor to manage changes in app.

Serve on Duke wide committees to provide communication counsel and support for the university and identified goals and objectives.

Support and coordinate communication needs as part of Dukes Emergency Management Team.

Manage the agenda and updates for regular meetings of the Emergency Management Steering Committee.

Serve as the primary back up for emergency communications and work directly with senior executives such as the Vice President for Administration, the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations, the Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Chief of Police.

Monitor and analyze work related programs and activities across central administrative units; develop appropriate strategies for communicating information to appropriate target audiences.

Assess effectiveness of communications by designing, administering and analyzing the results of various assessment tools (such as surveys, focus groups, and personal interviews).

Serve as a consultant for communication opportunities; collaborate with customer service representatives, technical consultants, graphic designers, photographers, and freelancers as needed.

Conduct interviews, research, develop, and edit news stories, feature articles and multi media presentations for internal audiences that publicize and promote Duke activities and programs.

Coordinate with Dukes News and Communications office and other units to disseminate communications to staff, faculty, students and other members of the Duke community as appropriate.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendation or conclusions.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Dukes senior leaders and other Duke communication offices and colleagues.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Completion of a Bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Requires at least 8 years of experience in writing, public relations, communications or related discipline.

Skills

Skilled in managing group dynamics, providing feedback, influencing and negotiating, facilitating collaboration, and working in a team based environment. Demonstrated proficiencies with PC applications.
