Occupational Summary

The Behavioral Threat Assessment Case Manager and Crisis Response Coordinator will be a core member of the Behavioral Threat Assessment Team working directly with the Director of Behavioral Threat Assessment and the Threat Assessment Investigator and will be involved in various aspects of behavior threat assessment, case management, violence prevention initiatives, victim advocacy, and behavioral crisis response. The case manager/coordinator will work collaboratively with university and health system partner units to support efforts to protect Duke University and Duke University Health System.

The role encompasses a range of responsibilities, including conducting threat assessments, developing case management strategies, monitoring and tracking individual cases, ensuring compliance with recommendations, providing victim advocacy in cases interpersonal violence and stalking, collaborating with external agencies and law enforcement as needed, and providing comprehensive outreach services to faculty, staff, and students. The position requires a proactive approach to developing prevention and outreach campaigns related to workplace violence, interpersonal violence and stalking prevention, and other relevant topics.

In addition to the case management responsibilities, the coordinator will assist the Director in establishing crisis response procedures and providing intervention and support to DUPD patrol officers in responding to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises and reported incidents of violence.

The coordinator will be available for emergencies after hours and on weekends regarding relevant cases.

Work Performed

Conduct behavioral threat assessments and develop case management strategies for students, employees, patients, and non-affiliates.

Create and implement threat management plans and safety plans for individuals of concern and identified victims.

Provide outreach and consultation services to faculty, staff, and students through various mediums.

Conduct follow-up assessments on cases using appropriate tools and methodologies.

Coordinate intervention plans with university, health system, and community resources.

Monitor and track individual cases utilizing a case management database to ensure compliance with recommendations and address emerging concerns.

Collaborate with external community agencies and law enforcement as necessary.

Partner with various university departments to ensure comprehensive case management.

Assist in developing prevention and outreach campaigns related to violence and safety issues.

Serve on the university and health system behavioral assessment teams.

Collaborate with DUPD CID and Threat Assessment investigators in the assessment and triage of all incoming interpersonal violence and stalking related cases.

Coordinate with and assist investigators on follow-up of assigned cases, including conducting victim interviews and completing violence risk assessments.

Coordinate response and support services with appropriate university departments (Human resources, Counseling Center, Student Affairs, PAS, Health System Risk Management, Police and others as appropriate).

Provide victim/witness assistance services to reporting victims and concerned community members.

Refer victims to appropriate University resources to provide ongoing victim assistance, as needed.

Provide court accompaniment and oversee the design, development and assessment of a 24-hour Legal Advocate Program to assist people seeking DVPOs.

Assist with collecting data for Clery and the Annual Security Report.

Assist with creating materials for distribution with required information under VAWA.

Serve as the department's functional expert for interpersonal violence and stalking.

Follow protocols regarding handling of confidential and highly sensitive data and information.

Prepare departmental reports of interpersonal violence and stalking cases and details about responses to the reported incidents.

Engage internal and/or community resources, including the Student Affairs on-call team, Durham HEART, and others, in the development and implementation of behavioral health related crisis response.

Provide on-site behavioral health consultation for members of the Duke University Police Department.

In partnership with a DUPD patrol officer, respond to calls of concerning behavior that include reports of mental health and interpersonal violence, as well as threats of violence, to conduct behavioral health and safety assessments and provide supportive interventions to impacted persons.

Assist with deescalating the situation or crisis through the provision of support and identify the necessary resources available to the individual in the current setting to resolve the crisis.

Conduct preliminary threat assessments and determine immediate level of risk to the individual and/or others noting contributing environmental, medical, psychiatric, and/or interpersonal factors.

Assist in the arrangement for transportation to emergency and crisis facilities, and accompany the individual in crisis when appropriate.

Provide emotional, debriefing, and resource support, or secure those supports, for bystanders and others impacted by critical incidents.

Coordinate follow-up with university, health system, and community

Collaborate with University and Health System partners in the development and coordination of prevention education and awareness programming for violence prevention, domestic/sexual violence and stalking for members of the Duke community.

Provide education the community of identifying behaviors of concern and reporting process.

Provide relevant department training on best practices in crisis response.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires A Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, mental health, psychology, law Enforcement or other relevant degree.

A valid North Carolina Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.

Experience

Work requires 3 years' experience in the delivery of mental healthcare in a setting in which both trauma-informed care and crisis assessment.
