Occupational Summary

Serve as chief fiscal and planning officer of Duke University Press, with responsibility for budget, personnel, business systems and processes and publishing operations, exclusive of formation and execution of editorial policy.

Work Performed

Direct the establishment and implementation of Duke University Press plans, programs and schedules with respect to budget, personnel, business systems and processes, and publishing operations excluding editorial policy, ensuring conformance with University requirements and objectives. Provide administrative direction to staff management by applying specialized knowledge of techniques and methods in the implementation and execution of major Duke University Press programs.

Direct activities associated with the preparation of proposals for new journals to be acquired or managed by D.U. Press, evaluating such information as journal's stability and reputation, potential for circulation, starting costs, revenues, break even point and administrative feasibility; plan and implement the publication of books from selected journals.

Plan and direct activities involved in the design of books, periodicals, and related promotional materials to include preparation of manufacturing specifications, coordination of editorial production and design, and manufacture of Duke University Press books and promotional materials.

Develop and implement long range planning for journal acquisition, publication and fulfillment; plan long range strategies and application of new technologies for book and periodical design; develop policies and procedures for journal publication and book and periodical design.

Determine fiscal requirements and direct the preparation of budgetary recommendations. Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires seven years experience in such areas as journal or book publication and marketing, production, fulfillment or design to acquire skills necessary to direct the publishing operations of a university press.
