Occupational Summary
Annually, acquire approximately one-quarter or more of the list of Duke Press books selected for publication; titles that fit within the editorial vision as set by the Editorial Director.
Work Performed
Cultivate a wide network of authors, advisors, and agents. Solicit, acquire, and review prospective manuscripts with regard to scholarly quality and potential readership/sales.
With the assistance of one or more editorial associates.
Arrange for expert reviews of selected manuscripts.
Work with authors/editors to discuss recommended changes in their manuscripts and advise them in implementing revisions.
Prepare publication contracts between authors/editors and DUP, for signature by the Editorial Director and the Press Director.
Prepare packets for submission to the Editorial Advisory Board for approval.
Prepare the approved manuscripts for transmission into production.
Present the accepted material to the Books Marketing Department.
Travel to campuses, academic meetings, and events to represent DUP and to attract authors and editors of the sort DUP is seeking.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires organizational, analytical and communications skills normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires the ability to plan, manage, and supervise functional activities of a department involved in the acquisition and development of books, generally acquired through six years of relevant experience.
